Memorial Day, initially known as Decoration Day, originated after the Civil War, which concluded in 1865. This conflict was the deadliest in U.S. history, resulting in the deaths of over 620,000 soldiers. The unprecedented scale of loss led to the creation of national cemeteries and a desire to honor the fallen.
It is a day for visiting cemeteries and memorials to mourn the military personnel who died in the line of duty. Volunteers will place American flags on the graves of those military personnel in national cemeteries. Others such as family and friends will also come to lay flowers on the graves of those who died in the US military.
On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day.
The holiday began after the Civil War to honor fallen Union soldiers.
Of the two official United States holidays recognizing the commitment of members of America’s military services, Memorial Day honors those who lost their lives while defending their country.
While many celebrate the day outdoors alongside family and friends, others mourn the loss of their brothers and sisters in arms, paying tribute to their memory in any way they can.
Memorial Day is a reminder of the brave men and women who served our country and gave their lives for our freedom.
It’s not just a day off; it’s a time to think about why we remember these heroes. For veterans, it’s a chance to honor those who are no longer here.
Use this day to show how grateful we are for their bravery, and as a promise that we’ll always remember their courage and sacrifice.
